Two post in two days not bad, this post is about some work I sent over to Tanto Vintage they wanted a logo doing so I decided to give it a go and a website designing because there one at the moment looks like it was made by a colour blind child.

So this was my first idea basically I tried to do something cool and trendy... didnt work. So then I tweaked it to try and make it work,.....didnt work, but I did mock up a few examples of how it could work on various things

So there you go, as you can probably guess they didn't use it and went with something else, ah well that will teach me to try and imitate whats trendy

Heres something I recently sent over for Dig which I doubt will end up being used due to deadlines and what not, basically I was asked to create a logo which could be used for a series of articles that are going to be ran about a project Nike 6.0 have been running in collaboration with various BMX company's called Partners in Crime now Nike already have a logo for this that appears on everything to do with this project but Dig wanted me to create something different and something that was "a bit more Dig" for the articles so I came up with the hand drawn typography with the vectors in the background changing based on what city the riders were in, for example the one above was based on Berlin, and this would differ per page and article, so there you go.

Well... I have been a busy boy as of late and unfortunately the boring stuff to fun ratio has been firmly on the boring stuff side, mainly because I have had my dissertation to get done, the deadline is tomorrow but I have literally just finished it this second, BOOYEAHH! and I thought I would update my website and put all the interesting stuff that I been up to over the last couple of months.

First things first, I have been asked to film for a video called "one more brew" the basic concept behind the video is this... "A video project aimed at bringing together the UK scene over the dismal winter months. With the weather being nearly impossible to predict two hours in advance let alone two months we have asked 10 UK based filmer's to put together a 5 minute video section documenting how they have batted through the Winter" so I am one one of the filmers for this video and the deadline was yesterday so I have had to do that, I cannot show you the video obviously because it is going to be released on a dvd and I dont want to ruin the surprise, But I can show you a screen shot of the titles I designed for it, have a look,

The basic concept behind them is that the man in in the corner is Ls6bmx's ident and the graphic containing there names appears on the index page of www.ls6bmx.co.uk so I tried to keep it the same as I wanted maintain the identity of ls6bmx. Oh and before I forget the is a "One More Brew" website that you can visit by clicking here, also if you are wondering about the image at the top of this post, all the filmers were asked to send in a photo of them holding a cup of tea for there fimers profile page on the website, so I decided to do something a little more light hearted and fun rather than me just stood there holding a cup of tea, the photo was taken by my new photo taking, burglar chasing housemate, Liam Oakes, (thanks for that)

Right I am going into college to bind my mother-flipping Dissertation, I will update more when I get back.

I found out about a camera system known as "Red" today and Its one of the first digital video cameras that has quality which can be compared to that of the 35mm cinematic world which is pretty mental. It has high speed recording, amazing colour reproduction and the ability to be able to put on just about any lens you need for the job the red modular camera system seems pretty mint if you ask me, I also came across a skate video filmed with this mad high tech camera check it out.... oh and check it out in full HD quality here

Here is an idea of how one of the possible pullouts may look, It still needs to be furthered as I do not feel it looks exciting enough yet but I am considering using the same layout throughout but changing the pattern of the colored line on each page to mix things up a bit.

Liverpool Design Symposium

So, Myself and a few others headed over to Liverpool yesterday for the Liverpool Design Symposium. The first talk we went to see was entitled "The Emotional Type" by Bruno Maag who is the founder of Dalton Maag who specialize in font and logo design for leading brands, heres a few examples of there work below....

I found the talk very interesting and he clearly has a very meticulous and precise approach towards typographic design.

On the other hand the second talk by Matt Pyke from Universal Everything was completely different in every way. For starters his Design studio isn't your regular studio, in fact he runs it from his garden shed and has little face time with his employees, he even directed a music video via i-chat, he is definitely pushing and challenging how designers work and the concept of a design studio, Anyway heres a couple of examples of his work....

I got a little bored today so I thought I would play around with an image my friend Joe Bailey took and make something to promote a collaborative project that me and a friend Andre are doing, we are going to make a full length ls6bmx video and hopefully have a premier at the Faversham, no word as of yet as to when it will be finished but it should be fun making it, we have been chatting and were really into the idea of making it like some of the older bmx videos so I am really looking forward to doing this.

So last night we were all watching a film in our living room, (which is in our basement) and we go upstairs to find our front door wide open and Merlin's 24" i-mac has gone... some cheeky little chav's/scally's had climbed in through a window and taken it, honestly I cant even understand that sort of attitude, and the cheek of it, we were less that 10 feet away and could have walked in on then at any point but they still came into our house and took it, anyway the police came round but they seemed more interested in filling out there forms for the latest crime statistics rather than actually doing anything about it, It was a bit of a joke to be perfectly honest.

End of year 2

So its the end of year two and I can finally relax, well a little bit at least I have got to start reading for my dissertation which I am not looking forward to writing at all if I am honest as I am terrible at writing as I am sure you have noticed when trying to read my blog, but it is something that has to be done. Its strange to think that after summer I will starting my third year and one step closer to entering the real world with a degree and looking for work within the design industry or maybe not, I could suddenly decide that I hate design and want to become a professional bodybuilder and action movie star, although I doubt that will happen.
So how has year two been for me overall? Well It started off poor I did not feel as though I was talented enough to get through the year but it started to get better, I enjoyed the Typography optional module and the animation module but my work started to become very illustration based and people started to think thats all I wanted to to but its not, I would like to do something more substantial than that, I would like to design things and be thought of as a designer not and illustrator, but it turns out that I cant design and when I try to it ends up looking shit, but I am going to get better through year three and prove to people that I am not just someone who does doodles for a magazine every now and then. So thats my little rant about second year over and I am looking forward to summer and riding my bike, getting the ls6bmx website up and running and being successful, I am really going to try and push ls6bmx this summer and get photos and videos on there and I am looking forward to doing it. I am also looking forward to seeing friends and going traveling I may try and organize some sort of mini ls6bmx road trip or something. Anyway thats enough from me I am going to make some tea and play golden eye on the N64....Spiceworld.

Insane Circle Jump

Whilst out riding the other day we went to a spot in the University which is usually fun and a friend of mine Joe Bailey was looking at this huge set of stairs.. 13 to be precise, at first we thought he was going to ride down them or jump them to flat but it turned out he was wanting to 360 them (spin 360 degrees whilst jumping down the stairs). Now you would not believe how huge these stairs are so I was shocked when he called it, anyway we set up the flashes and I took the photo you see above. I am not to happy with the photo as I took it a little bit early in his rotation I should have waited a split second more but its still a good photo and I am psyched Joe did it and I got the photo.

The Layout Book

I was in a crit the other day and my layout skills were called into question so I went out and treated myself to "The Layout Book" which is about exactly what it says on the cover...layouts, I have felt that this book has taught me about layouts more and enabled me to understand what works on a page. It also has numerous examples of layouts with in the book and has made me realize the kind of thought and planning that goes into a layout in a magazine, book or a website and I look forward to progressing my skills further...hopefully

Dig BMX Magazine

I went up to Glasgow this weekend to Dig BMX Magazines HQ. I primarily went up for a break but I also went for work experience to see how Dig is run and what goes into making a magazine. I found the whole thing very interesting and had a lot of fun whilst I was up there finding out how Dig came to be, I was surprised to find out in the very beginning it was created in reaction to what the bigger magazines were doing as they were not conveying the early bmx scene how a lot of the riders felt it should have, so they decided to create there own magazine with a very d.i.y feel to it. Whilst I was up there I also managed to get myself on the family page of the website which is the photo above and heres a like to the page itself just so you know I am not lying... oh and before I forget if you ever get the chance to go to Glasgow for riding or just for a visit do it, it has amazing street spots and the accent is the best in the world for swearing,

A little rant...with a little bit of design at the end

So... its 02:29 and I have just got in from my friend Joe's birthday and besides from the fact that someone shoved a pint glass in my face and cut up my chin I had a pretty good night, but that is low down on my list of things that has annoyed me today, the main thing that has annoyed me is that a certain tutor of mine (You could describe this tutor as the "Gorden Ramsey" of typography), in my opinion crossed the line between "critical feedback" and just plain rudeness. I have a lot of respect for this tutor and value there opinion but I feel as though they used the fact that they had just had a bad day as an excuse to be rude. Anyway enough of my rant, I found a designers website today his name is Timothy Aves Brown and he has recently finished University and has already landed himself with a job re-designing E4, which is quite a high profile project, I could not imagine having that sort of pressure on my first job out of University, you should check out his website by clicking the link above.

So, I have not been updating this as much as I would have liked as of late which is through my own laziness rather than me not having time or anything. I was browsing the internet the other day and I came across something that normally I would dislike as its "conceptual" and I usually hate that type of thing but this is actually quite interesting its a website called We Feel Fine (click the link to check it out) and basically it scans peoples blogs from all over the world searching for sentences with the words " I feel" and so on, and then places that sentence on the website and designates a coloured circle relating to how they are feeling, there are all sorts of ways of how to view these which are demonstrated below and you can also view where the people are in the world. But what I personally like is that its a very interesting idea done very well, I really like the way they have designed the site and how aesthetically interesting it is, so go check it out.

I went and purchased the new issue of Dig bmx magazine the other day and whilst flicking through I noticed some of my illustrations that I had sent through to Will had been used for the Fly bikes article I was quite surprised that he used all of them actually because I sent three through in the hope that he would like one and use that but he used them all and I am really pleased with how they came out. I was also shocked to see my name under the art and design contributers page and that he had also used some drawings I did of some leaves. So I am really happy about that.

Also whilst in London my house mate Merlin and I were chatting about the type face 'Johnston Sans' and its use on the London underground signs...as you do... and whilst our good chum Jamie was getting extremely bored with our Typography chatter it turned out that his dates Grandfather was Edward Johnston, the very man who created the extremely practical and legible type face. Fancy that.

London Science Museum

I went to the London Science Museum the other day and had an amazing time, now I know its not really an art or design exhibition but I think it is definitely worth a visit, and as well as being educational it there is also some amazing stuff in there and it is always nice to see the design process of something like the car which when you think about it is an incredible feat of mechanics and design. I must admit that my favorite part was the interactive floor which was mostly populated by children but the interactive stuff they had was just as fun for adults.

I found this whilst I was over on Us Design Studio and I thought it was a very interesting, clever, and funny idea, and as a vegetarian I thought it could be used as some sort of anti meat eating campaign and raise peoples awareness to what they are eating. Also I think as images they have a lot of impact and made me look twice before realising what it was that I was looking at, so go check there website out they have a lot of good stuff on there not all quite as odd as this though.

Earthquake!

So then, its 1.00 o'clock in the morning and I have just been woken up by an earthquake of all things, I was just dozing off when I felt my room shake, and being the rational man that I am the first thing I thought was "Its a ghost my rooms haunted... shit I'm fucked the ghost is going to scare me by shaking my room" which is actually quiet scary if you think about it, anyway then I felt the second tremor and I started to start thinking it was an earthquake and my suspicions were confirmed. My house mates and the rest of my street had been woken up by this earthquake. So we started to look on the BBC website to see if there was any news but there was not anything on there. What an eventful night!

I went to York this weekend with my girlfriend to do the romancing and that and I came across this little book in one of Yorks many book shops its a collection of old record covers from the 70s, 80s and early 90s at first I saw the cover and thought what is this horrible Nu-rave nightmare style graphics they have got on the cover but after flicking through a few pages I decided that it was worth the £2.00 price and splashed out.

Also whilst in York I dragged my girlfriend to the National Railway Museum and It was amazing trains are mint..end of, I love going to places like this as you get to see the design and thinking process of something so monumental as a train and it is a good thing to see as a designer, now I know its not considered an exhibition as such but I felt it was relevant as a designer because it is always good to see the design process no matter what it is, I was just glad it was trains, so get yourself there if your ever in York.

A couple of weeks ago a friend of Merlin's came up called George, George is a professional photographer who often has his photos published in Ride bmx mag and also did the photos for Merlin's interview which was also in Ride he also is the art director for a micro biology magazine... Anyway he was kind enough to shoot this photo of a wall ride iv'e been eyeing up for a while. I doubt its going to be in Ride or anything as its not very good if I'm honest but I'm pretty happy with how it came out so I thought id post it up on here.

I got a bit bored today and did the rounds on youtube and came across this little video, I know its bad but I had a little giggle, on a more serious note for a Country that is based on its beliefs and constitutions one of which im sure is that everyone is entitled to freedom of speech, this is one of the most unnecessary and retarded things iv seen in a while and im sure there are arguments saying he was resisting arrest and what not but it didnt call for that amount of force to be used by the police or security...pricks I just could never imagine this happening in the U.K. especially not in a university. I reckon his mates should have stuck up for him and battered the security, not sat around doing nothing

Poster Competition

There has been a competition running lately at college to design the poster and promotional material for the end of year shows and the winner of this competition wins £500 so not only is it worth it because it would look good in portfolio if I were to win but I would also get £500 ...which is nice. So above is the poster and the front and back of the vip invite, my idea stems from the illustration I used as the front cover of my book for the collectors project and the idea is that art and design is around us constantly and we are always interacting with it. Now I know this is a cliche concept but I felt it gave my the freedom to try something out I have never tried before and I'm happy with what came out although the type is not very legable but that could be changed hopefully I will do well and make some money.

Wales Trip

I hate to be one of those people who post really boring photos of there trips and holidays but I am, I'm sure you will get over it. As you may know some friends and I took a trip to wales for a few days and it was the most fun I've had in a long time, I get so bogged down with college work and the general stresses of living in Leeds it was good to get out and see and do different things and not worry about college. The trip was not purely to go sight seeing and tearing around in a 4x4 on our friends farm, it was so Charles could go visit a boat building school to see whether or not it is somewhere he would like to go and live, I think he enjoyed the school and the town so he may end up going there who knows. Anyway as far as the trip went it was mint we drank lots burnt anything we could on the fire and I got attacked by a Wasp I have no idea what a wasp was doing out in Febuary in the freezing cold, We also scaled a mountain although on the photo it does look as though were stood around a pile of rocks in a field but it was a mountain!

I have been entering t-shirt competitions lately so I decided to go out and treat myself to the T-shirt Factory book. It is full of designs varying from illustrative to typography it is full of good designs and some not so nice designs but its personal preference I guess, So if you are interested in T-shirt design I recommend purchasing this book.

Ls6 bmx

About a year ago I started ls6bmx as part of my personal project. The idea behind it was to document the bmx scene in the Hyde park area as there is a lot of riders living there, soon people started getting involved and it ended up being me Merlin Bing and Kyle who were running it but as of late we have all been so busy that it has been rejected. I dont know if we will ever start doing it again maybe over summer when we all have free time and can start enjoying it again but for now here are a few of my favorite photos from the site.

Fuck you, yanke blue jeans

I have been really lazy as of late with updating this blog and a lot of other things, but I thought I would give a quick round up of what iv been doing lately. Well I returned from a short trip to wales on Tuesday I stayed on a friends farm in the middle of nowhere It was possibly one the best times iv had in a while, the gif above is of my friend Jake doing his new favorite hobby chopping wood I should have some more photos of us scaling mountains and tearing around in 4x4 up soon... wales is mint, anyone who enjoys being outdoors and doing stuff rather than just sat around not doing anything I would fully recommend it.
Also in the pointless news department, Me Merlin Bing, and a few friends decided to start a house band the other week, we decided on the name "Fuck you, Yanke blue jeans" The band consisted of Merlin on harmonica Bing on Guitar Me or Joe on bass guitar jake on wash bored and kyle on pots and pans, our first practice lasted a good hour before the neighbors complained which I think means were ready for a gig but something tells me "fuck you yanke blue jeans" wont get that far, It was fun anyway.
I think that may be it I shall post up more photos of my adventure in wales soon, ta rahh

Illustration Book

I posted the front cover of my illustration book a while back so I took a few photos of some pages to post on here, The final book ended up having 38 pages and was a collection of my illustrations and I left a few pages in the back for people to do there own drawings in order to make the book more interactive. Also this will probably be my last post before I come back for new year as I dont have the internet at home and even If I did I am going to be concentrating all my efforts into eating far to much not riding enough drinking to much and generally being as lazy as possible over the Christmas period all in an attempt to get a man belly for the new years. So have a good Christmas and New Years!!!

More Typography...

Iv really been getting interested in typography lately and I have made yet another typeface and guess what....... Its another one made of strokes I decided to call it introduction im not sure why and I dont think The name is that important anyway, I like the idea of creating something and then seeing how far you can push that idea or piece of design I have found that it gets my psyched on design and generally trying out new things. Iv had that feeling a lot lately not just regarding to college or design but everything from riding bmx to just hanging out with friends and what not .

Typographic Box

As part of my typography module at college I decided to make a Typographical box with information regarding Leading, Kerning, Margins, Size and Weight and gutters which are important aspects of typography. It was decided that my box was not easy to navigate during one of the crits so I decided to have colour coded guides to help people navigate the box.

Heres the front cover for my Illustrations book I am thinking that this image and the image on the back are going to be the only ones that are printed off on a computer the rest of the book is all going to be hand rendered in contrast with the photography book which is all cleanly designed and laid out on computer and maybe even screen based?? im still not sure to be honest.

Photography book

For the past few months now we have been designing books as part of our collectors brief and I have decided to make two books on my personal work. One will be a collection of my photography and the other would be a collection of my illustrations, I have decided make these books because I want to use these books as almost a personal portfolio so I can judge where my work is now, what my influences are, and what style I work in and in a year I can look back and see how I have progressed or how my work has changed. Also I feel as though it could be used as a mini portfolio if someone one was wondering how I worked.
Below is the design for the front cover of my photography book, I decided to go for almost a constructivist montage of cameras and then I designed the type based on the typeface cooper black which was originally created in the 1920s but it contrasts with the constructavist style of the montage which I think give it almost a 60s photo manual feel which im quite into if im honest.

Stroked Sans

I have been working on the typefaces I posted earlier and have come up with this one I like to call stroked sans, It is the first and only typeface I have done that I am proud of, although i am not to sure about the legibility you definitely could not use it for body copy but I think it could work nice as a display text.

New type

Ive been experimenting with typography lately and have been making some display type. This is one variation of Helvetica that I have modified. I like the idea of modifying existing types as it is a gradual way of easing myself into typographic design, I do not want to jump in head first and try to design a typeface from scratch because I feel that would be almost naive to think that i could just design a complete typeface.

About a year or so now me and a few friends of mine started ls6bmx a website... well a myspace page dedicated to documenting the Leeds BMX scene and in particular the Hyde Park Area in the ls6 area code of Leeds. We decided to all create a logo in which i did the illustration. After a few months of having it up we came across the fit logo (below) and we realised they are similar. This was not intentional and we would never blatently copy anyones else's design.
